why tron asks for trx
USDT on TRON (the "TRC20" version) is not a native coin. it is a contract that Tether deployed on the network, and every transfer is a call to that contract. TRON charges for that work in two resources:
- energy — pays for running the contract. a USDT transfer needs about 65,000 energy when the recipient already holds USDT, and about 131,000 when it doesn't, because the contract has to create a new balance slot.
- bandwidth — pays for the bytes of the transaction, around 345. every account gets 600 free bandwidth a day, which covers roughly one transfer.
if you don't have energy, TRON takes the cost from your TRX: energy × price. on 26 sep 2026 the price was 100 sun per unit of energy (1 TRX = 1,000,000 sun), read straight from the network's chain parameters. that is where the numbers above come from, with TRX at $0.337 that day.
this is why people end up with USDT they can't move: the balance is there, but the account has no TRX to pay the network, and getting a few TRX in means buying it somewhere first.
option 1: keep trx and let it burn
the default in most wallets. buy TRX, keep it next to your USDT, and every transfer burns some.
| recipient | energy | TRX burned | in dollars |
|---|---|---|---|
| already holds USDT | ~65,000 | ~6.5 TRX | ~$2.19 |
| never held USDT | ~131,000 | ~13.1 TRX | ~$4.42 |
| no free bandwidth left today | +345 bytes | +0.345 TRX | +$0.12 |
simple, but you have to buy TRX somewhere, keep topping it up, and you pay the most when the recipient is new, which is exactly when you're least expecting it.
option 2: rent or stake energy
renting: energy markets lend you energy for a short time in exchange for TRX. it's cheaper than burning; when we used a rental contract in july 2026 our measured cost landed between $1.40 and $1.63 per transfer. but you still need TRX to pay the rent, and a tool that rents before every send.
staking: lock TRX and the network gives you energy every day. it makes sense if you send a lot, but it ties up capital: covering one transfer a day takes a large stake, and unstaking has a 14-day waiting period on mainnet.
both work. both assume you're comfortable managing TRX.
option 3: gasless usdt, no trx at all
TRON has a gasless rail called GasFree, launched by JustLend DAO. instead of sending the transaction yourself, you sign a permit for the transfer, a provider submits it, and the network fee is taken in USDT, inside the same transfer. your address never needs TRX.
two things to know:
- the fee is set by the provider, not by TRON, so it varies between wallets that use GasFree.
- the first transfer activates the account, a one-time extra charge.
how to do it in dolaramp
dolaramp runs every TRON send on the gasless rail. there's no TRX anywhere in the app.
- open the app and tap send dollars.
- pick tron as the network and usdt as the stablecoin.
- paste or scan the address. TRON addresses start with
T. - type how much should arrive. the screen shows the fee and the total before you confirm.
- confirm with your PIN or face id. the transfer lands in a few seconds.
today that is 1.50 USDT per send, and on your very first TRON send another 1.50 USDT once to activate the account. dolaramp adds nothing on top on TRON: that 1.50 is the network rail's fee. receiving is free.
side by side
| method | need TRX? | cost per send (26 sep 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| burn TRX | yes | ~$2.19 · ~$4.42 to a new address |
| rent energy | yes, to pay the rent | ~$1.40–1.63 (our measurement, jul 2026) |
| stake TRX | yes, a lot, locked | no per-send fee, capital locked, 14-day unstake |
| gasless in dolaramp | no | 1.50 USDT · +1.50 once on the first send |
TRX, energy price and the gasless fee change over time. these numbers are from 26 sep 2026; the app always shows the current fee before you confirm.
before you send
- check the network. a TRC20 address (starts with
T) is not an ERC20 or TON address. sending on the wrong network can be irreversible. - check the token. fake "USDT" tokens circulate on TRON. dolaramp only reads Tether's official contract; you can check any address with our address checker and see the contracts we use on contracts.
- send a small test first when it's a new recipient and a large amount.
for businesses
if you receive USDT on TRON from many customers, the same rail sweeps and pays out through the dolaramp API at $1.60 all-in on free, $1.55 on pro, with no TRX in any of your addresses. every fee is on pricing.
faq
Can I send USDT TRC20 with 0 TRX?
Yes, through a gasless rail such as GasFree: the network fee is paid in USDT inside the transfer. In dolaramp it is 1.50 USDT per send today, plus 1.50 USDT once to activate the account.
Why does TRON ask for TRX to send USDT?
USDT on TRON is a smart contract, and running it costs energy. Without energy the network burns TRX from the sender to pay for it.
How much TRX does a USDT transfer burn?
At the energy price of 26 Sep 2026 (100 sun), about 6.5 TRX to an address that already holds USDT and about 13.1 TRX to one that does not.
Is the first send more expensive?
On a gasless rail, yes: the first transfer activates the account once. In dolaramp that is 1.50 USDT on top of the normal fee, one time only.
